Philippine-based geothermal developer Energy Development Corporation (EDC) has at least six new projects with an additional capacity of 100 MW lined up for completion in the next five years. This lineup will be a combination of expansion of existing geothermal sites and greenfield projects.

 

EDC’s growth plan was announced by Atty. Allan Barcena, the AVP and Head of Public Relations of EDC. Part of this plan is the 3.6-MW binary expansion of the Mindanao geothermal power plant which started operations earlier this year, and the 29-MW Palayan Bayan binary power plant and the 2o-MW Tanawon geothermal project, both in the Bicol region. Start of construction for the Tanawon geothermal project is by the last quarter of 2023.

 

Next in EDC’s project lineup is the 28-MW Mahanagdong binary facility for the company will receive funding under Japan’s Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) Financing Support Programme.

 

EDC also has plans to develop two greenfield projects, both in Mindanao. The first is the 50-MW Amacan geothermal project which is set to receive a grant for the U.S. Trade and Development Agency to execute a feasibility study. We had recently reported on the announcement of this funding agreement and the associated request for proposals (RFP).

 

The second greenfield project is the Mont Zion prospect which is located close to the existing Mount Apo geothermal facility. There is no feasibility study for this project yet, as the prospect is within protected area. Efforts are currently underway to convert the protection zone to allow for geothermal development.
