French Coriance Group has announced plans for a second geothermal district heating network in Champigny-sur-Marne, a municipality just outside of Paris, France.

In Champigny-sur-Marne, a municipality in the southwest of the capital of France, Paris, the Coriance Group wins contract for the creation of a second geothermal heat network.

As a forerunner in the field of geothermal energy, Champigny-sur-Marne chose in the early 1980s to use this renewable and local energy. Since 2016, the Coriance Group has been operating the city’s first geothermal plant and heat network. More than 7,000 housing equivalents are already supplied with heating and hot water.

To continue its active contribution to the region’s energy transition, the Coriance group, an operator specializing exclusively in virtuous heat and cold networks, will now build the second heating network, the new geothermal heat plant and will be in charge of drilling the geothermal doublet to a depth of 1,800 m. Coriance will implement an innovative solution for well drilling with an internal composite casing to avoid the corrosive effects of geothermal water and thus guarantee performance over time.

The equipment will be commissioned in 2022. The 9-km heat network will serve 5,000 homes and will be powered by 75 per cent renewable energy. EUR 35 million (around USD 38m) will be devoted to the creation of the means of production and the network. The heat network will prevent the emission of 9,500 tonnes of CO2 each year, equivalent to the emissions of 7,000 cars.

There are already 28 geothermal wells operating, out of around 80 supplying district heating networks in the Paris basin, Coriance claims proven expertise in this energy. In 6 years, Coriance has drilled 10 wells for a cumulative investment of EUR 71 million (around USD 77.5m).
