Plug Power Inc. has announced three projects that will utilize industrial-scale green hydrogen in glass manufacturing, aluminum recycling, and steel manufacturing processes.

The company’s 5MW containerized electrolyzer modules will be deployed for the first time in these applications, marking a significant step towards decarbonizing critical industrial sectors.

Plug Power, has partnered with Ardagh Glass Limmared AB, Hydro Havrand, and the APEX Group for these pioneering projects. The standardized turnkey system offered by Plug Power, with a production capacity of over two tons per day, simplifies implementation and reduces site construction costs, making it an attractive solution for large-scale green hydrogen production.

One of the projects will take place at Ardagh Glass Limmared AB in Sweden, where the company aims to produce 2.1 metric tons per day of green hydrogen by the end of the year. This will replace a portion of the natural gas currently used in the manufacturing process, resulting in a significant reduction in carbon emissions. Ardagh Glass Limmared AB, a key player in sustainable packaging solutions, will leverage hydroelectric power to generate hydrogen through Plug’s electrolyzer technology.

Hydro Havrand, a division of Norsk Hydro ASA, is pursuing decarbonization in the aluminum recycling industry. In Norway, Hydro Havrand plans to deploy a 5MW Plug electrolyzer module by June 2024, enabling the production of 2.1 metric tons per day of green hydrogen. The electrolyzer will replace natural gas in the plant’s burner, contributing to the company’s mission of establishing a closed-loop circular economy.

In Germany, Plug Power, in collaboration with the APEX Group, will showcase the feasibility of producing green steel through the decarbonization of ArcelorMittal’s blast furnaces in Bremen. Plug Power will supply two 5MW electrolyzer modules, capable of producing 4.2 metric tons per day of green hydrogen. The project’s long-term goal is to achieve full decarbonization of the steel industry not only in northern Germany but also across Europe.

These projects align with the European Union’s ambitious plan to produce 10 million metric tons of green hydrogen annually by 2030, aiming to decarbonize key industries and the transportation sector. The deployment of Plug Power’s electrolyzers will play a crucial role in realizing this vision and accelerating the transition to a greener, more sustainable future.

Plug CEO Andy Marsh expressed enthusiasm for the groundbreaking projects, highlighting the company’s commitment to scaling the green hydrogen economy. He emphasized the demand for Plug’s 5MW electrolyzer module, lauding its holistic design, compactness, and ease of installation.
