With the characteristics of zero carbon emissions and high energy conversion efficiency, the production of green hydrogen from offshore wind energy becomes the optimal solution applied today by many countries in the world in the energy transition.

This is also one of the innovative solutions that Vietnam intends to implement to achieve the goal of reducing net emissions to zero by 2050.

According to Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan, hydrogen has been recognized around the world as a source of clean energy and indispensable in the energy structure of many countries to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

At the beginning of 2023, more than 40 countries issued National Hydrogen Strategies and important financial support policies to shape and develop the resource industry.

In Vietnam, the development of hydrogen energy is in accordance with Resolution No. 55-NQ/TW of the Political Bureau of February 11, 2020 on the strategic orientation of the country’s national energy development until 2030, with a view to 2045, and Decision No. 893/QD-TTg of July 26, 2023, which approves the National Energy Master Plan for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050.

With this guidance, the Ministry of Industry and Trade is seeking views to develop a draft strategy for hydrogen production and the implementation of gas-fired and offshore wind projects.

According to the draft strategy, Vietnam will promote the development of hydrogen energy production and hydrogen-derived fuels in areas with renewable energy potential, thus forming a synchronous ecosystem of hydrogen energy industry from production to distribution and use.

According to the Vietnam Petroleum Institute (VPI), until 2025, the cost of producing clean hydrogen (including blue and green hydrogen) will remain very high, so for clean hydrogen to be gradually developed and perfected in Vietnam, government support policies are necessary to ensure the competitiveness of clean hydrogen sources.

With advantages in production networks and supply chains in the development of green hydrogen, Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PVN) has participated in the strategy and policy planning process seeking to create the necessary legal framework for the development of this energy.

PVN focuses on the research and application of new technologies in the production, transportation, storage and use chain of hydrogen.

Regarding the use of hydrogen, PVN’s petrochemical refineries and nitrogen fertilizer factories are direct customers that use green hydrogen sources to gradually replace the current gray hydrogen source.

Furthermore, with extensive experience in oil and gas exploitation and operation of offshore projects, PVN and its member unit, Vietnam Petroleum Technical Services Corporation (PTSC), are implementing offshore wind energy projects with the aim to create a premise for the development of green hydrogen.
