A recent IEA report in collaboration with Geothermal energy has the potential to generate 140 times the world’s electricity needs.
The partnership combines Project Innerspace’s GeoMap data set with SLB GeothermEx’s geothermal consulting expertise to identify and develop geothermal resources worldwide.
Geothermal energy has the potential to satisfy global electricity needs up to 140 times, according to a recent International Energy Agency report in collaboration with Project Innerspace.
This places geothermal energy as the second most viable clean energy source after solar photovoltaic.
The collaboration aims to offer valuable insights into geothermal energy’s potential for various stakeholders.
Project Innerspace executive director Jamie Beard stated: “A central component of our theory of systemic change at Project Innerspace is the conviction that leveraging the technologies, capabilities, speed and scale of the oil and gas industry is necessary to grow geothermal into a thriving global powerhouse.
“Indeed, should the oil and gas industry engage in geothermal at scale, it would be transformational for global economic growth, stability and prosperity. It is our ambition as we build on this collaboration that we shift the massive potential of geothermal from the abstract into high-impact reality.”
Central to this collaboration is the GeoMap tool hosted on Google Earth Engine. This has been developed by Project Innerspace with the help of more than 100 researchers and scientists.
The GeoMap tool utilises Google Cloud’s scaleable infrastructure, BigQuery and Vertex AI, to integrate diverse datasets, enabling users to visualise and analyse geothermal potential across regions and identify promising development sites.
Google Cloud Energy Sector managing director Kyle Jessen stated: “This collaboration paves the way for widespread geothermal deployment on a global scale and will help meet future energy needs.
“By bringing Project Innerspace’s GeoMap, built on Google Cloud’s AI and data technologies, and SLB’s expertise in geothermal energy, businesses will have access to the tools and experience needed to grow geothermal energy programmes around the world.”
SLB renewables and energy efficiency vice-president Irlan Amir stated: “SLB’s deep geothermal expertise, combined with Project InnerSpace’s advanced visualisation and analysis, can significantly accelerate the development of geothermal assets worldwide.
“This synergy empowers industry players to leverage the available data and SLB’s GeothermEx team’s expertise to rapidly assess project viability and drive faster deployment of this critical clean and firm energy source.”
In a related development, DEEP Earth Energy Production recently announced a partnership with SLB to advance the development of Canada’s inaugural geothermal project.
The project in southeast Saskatchewan will generate 30MW of power from its first two phases.
