Ongoing exploration efforts are underway in Central Anatolia, focusing on geological structures, fault systems, and regional stress patterns. Detailed geological and geophysical surveys have been completed in the Giresun-?ebinkarahisar field, with further studies continuing in licensed areas of Kayseri and K?rsehir. Meanwhile, exploration activities in the Kücük Menderes Graben in Western Anatolia are progressing, with studies conducted in Izmir-Bayindir, Aliaga, Menemen, and Bergama. However, drilling operations in Balikesir were terminated due to low reservoir pressure.
Exploration is also ongoing in the Black Sea region, with studies conducted in Bolu and Düzce. In Eastern Anatolia, activities are taking place in Agri, Artvin, Bingöl, Erzurum, Igd?r, and Van. A geothermal drilling well in Agri was closed due to high reservoir pressure, prompting new studies to be planned in the region.
MTA has applied for geothermal resource exploration licenses under Law No. 5686 to Provincial Special Administrations and Governorships. As of the end of 2024, there are 51 geothermal licenses in total, with 17 newly granted, 18 abandoned, and 1 transferred through tenders. The organization continues to focus on identifying new geothermal sites and advancing work in existing fields.
The MTA has digitized all data from its geothermal exploration efforts and integrated them into a GIS-based database, aiming to create a detailed geothermal resource map of Türkiye. This initiative will provide access to the data for researchers and the public, enhancing the organization's ability to leverage geothermal resources for renewable energy applications.
The 2024 activity report underscores MTA's commitment to advancing geothermal energy as a sustainable and renewable resource for Türkiye. The organization is making significant progress in exploring and developing geothermal fields, with a focus on renewable energy utilization and energy independence. Continued exploration and development efforts are expected to yield further discoveries and contribute to Türkiye's energy mix.
