Cisco Unveils Quantum Chip to Power the Future of Distributed Computing

Cisco has introduced a prototype quantum chip, the Quantum Network Entanglement Chip, developed in collaboration with UC Santa Barbara, to advance scalable quantum networks. Unveiled in Santa Monica, the chip generates up to one million high-fidelity entangled photon pairs per second per channel at telecom wavelengths, enabling quantum states to remain correlated over long distances.

Designed to connect quantum computers, the chip facilitates communication similar to servers in a data center. Unlike conventional quantum systems requiring extreme cooling, it operates at room temperature and integrates with existing fiber-optic infrastructure, enhancing practicality for near-term use. Consuming less than one milliwatt, the Photonic Integrated Chip (PIC) is energy-efficient and compatible with current network hardware.

Vijoy Pandey, Cisco’s general manager and SVP of Outshift, stated: “Just as Cisco helped build infrastructure for the internet, we’re now creating quantum networking technology that will be the foundation for the quantum internet, making quantum computing practical years ahead of current timelines.” He estimated that impactful quantum applications could emerge within five to ten years.

The chip addresses scaling challenges in quantum computing, where most systems are limited to a few hundred qubits, while real-world applications may require millions. Cisco’s distributed model networks smaller quantum processors, akin to cloud computing, potentially enabling “quantum data centers” for real-time information sharing. Its vendor-agnostic design supports various quantum technologies, including superconducting, ion trap, and neutral atom systems.

The prototype is central to research at Cisco Quantum Labs in Santa Monica, where teams are advancing quantum compilers, random number generators, and secure entanglement protocols. Pandey noted: “Companies building quantum processors will benefit from Cisco’s quantum networking technologies to scale their systems.”

The chip aligns with industry efforts to develop quantum hardware. For instance, Microsoft introduced its Majorana 1 chip in 2025, using a topoconductor to enhance qubit reliability. Google’s Willow chip, unveiled in December 2024, performs complex computations rapidly. Startups like KETS Quantum Security, focusing on quantum key distribution, and Ephos, developing photonics-based chips, are also contributing to the quantum ecosystem.

Cisco’s innovation supports the growth of quantum-ready networks, fostering secure and efficient systems for future applications, and positions the company as a key player in the evolving quantum technology landscape.
