Atargis Energy Trials Indicate 1.96 MW Potential for Wave Energy Converter

Atargis Energy, a U.S.-based renewable energy company, has announced promising results from recent wave tank tests of its Cycloidal Wave Energy Converter (CycWEC), marking progress in utility-scale wave energy generation. The 1:15-scale model generated 150 W of shaft power, with projections estimating a full-scale output of 1.96 MW, which Atargis described as: “the highest power output ever recorded by a wave energy converter.”

The CycWEC employs lift-based hydrodynamics, a principle used in wind turbines and propellers, distinguishing it from point absorbers and attenuators. Designed as a wave termination device, it aligns parallel to wave crests to optimize energy capture. Atargis stated: “Hydrofoils using lift-based dynamics (like wind turbines) deliver highly efficient wave-to-shaft power conversion.” This design supports scalability, enhancing power output and reducing energy costs.

A proprietary real-time control algorithm enables the CycWEC to adapt to incoming waves, achieving energy extraction rates of 95% or higher. Atargis noted: “The real-time control algorithm maximizes the effectiveness of the hydrofoils to achieve wave power extraction of 95% or more.” This efficiency sets the device apart in the wave energy sector.

The CycWEC’s ability to submerge during extreme weather enhances its durability. Atargis explained: “Many ocean trials of wave energy converters (WECs) have been prematurely ended during storms. The CycWEC on the other hand can be submerged further below the surface in a storm… which is why it experiences storm survival loads that are smaller than the operational loads.” This feature reduces the need for overengineering, improving cost-effectiveness.

Higher rotational speeds allow the CycWEC to generate significant energy with a compact design, as hydrofoils rotate faster than surrounding water, unlike buoyancy- or drag-based systems. This efficiency enables smaller devices to produce comparable outputs, streamlining deployment and maintenance.

The system also offers logistical benefits, including a mooring and leg-jacking mechanism that lifts the unit out of the water for on-site maintenance. Atargis highlighted: “This eliminates the need for diving or expensive lifting equipment,” simplifying operations and reducing costs.

By leveraging innovative design and control systems, the company aims to contribute to the global renewable energy landscape, offering a scalable and resilient solution for harnessing ocean energy.
