The Visakhapatnam data center, Google’s largest in Asia by capacity and investment, is part of Alphabet’s regional expansion in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. Alphabet confirmed in April a $75 billion investment plan for 2025 to expand global data center capacity.
Andhra Pradesh’s IT Minister, Nara Lokesh, speaking in Singapore, said: “We’ve made certain announcements like Sify, which are public. There are certain announcements which are not yet public. In October, we will make those announcements.” This follows a 550-MW data center project by Sify Technologies in the state.
Since its 2014 split, Andhra Pradesh has pursued investments to address financial challenges. Lokesh noted that 1.6 GW of data center projects are secured, with a goal of 6 GW in five years, set to exceed India’s current 1.4 GW capacity within 24 months.
Lokesh added: “We’re also working on getting three cable landing stations in Visakhapatnam. We want to create enough of cable network, which will be two times what Mumbai has today.” These stations will enhance connectivity for data centers.
The state aims to develop 10 GW of energy capacity over five years, prioritizing sustainable sources. Lokesh said: “Majority will end up being actually green energy, and that’s the unique value proposition that we bring to the table.” Some coal-based power will ensure reliability for data centers.
