Siemens and Paragon Join Forces on Novel Hydrogen Production Technology

German technology group Siemens and UK-based Paragon Resources have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on scaling up a new hydrogen production method. The agreement aims to support the global deployment of Paragon’s green hydrogen technology, which does not rely on fossil fuels, electrolysis, or external electricity sources.

Paragon’s process involves reacting treated, recycled aluminium with water in the presence of a catalyst. This chemical reaction produces hydrogen gas, aluminium hydroxide, and heat. The aluminium hydroxide can be used in various industrial applications, while the heat generated may be captured and converted into electricity. The process reportedly results in zero emissions and a low environmental footprint.

The MoU outlines Siemens’ role in helping Paragon transition from pilot-stage operations to industrial-scale implementation. Siemens will provide technological support through its Xcelerator open digital business platform. This includes the integration of automation, digital twin systems, and AI-based process control to enhance reactor efficiency, optimize heat management, enable remote monitoring, and strengthen cybersecurity measures.

Andy Lane, Senior Commercial Manager at Siemens, stated: “Tackling the challenge of upscaling hydrogen production will be impossible without a willingness to collaborate. As a technology company, we have an integral role to play in supporting businesses such as Paragon Resources in developing, scaling and commercialising their innovative new processes and make a real impact. By integrating our automation and digitalisation expertise, we look forward to working with the team at Paragon to drive the creation of a robust hydrogen market for the UK that also supports other facets of sustainability including resource efficiency and circularity.”

Ian Calvert, CEO of Paragon Resources, said: “Green hydrogen is set to play a pivotal role in the global energy transition, offering a scalable, zero-emission solution for hard-to-abate sectors such as heavy industry, chemicals and long-haul transport. Siemens brings the industrial know-how and digital tools we need to rapidly move from pilot to full-scale deployment.”

In a separate development, Siemens also signed an MoU with Spanish renewable energy company RIC Energy to jointly advance projects related to renewable hydrogen, green ammonia, and e-fuels in Spain. The agreement includes collaboration on both technical and financial aspects, with plans to explore joint solutions and structured financing models for the initiatives.

Both partnerships reflect Siemens’ broader commitment to supporting clean energy technologies and enhancing sustainability through innovation and industrial-scale solutions.
