Heidelberg Materials’ cement plant in Brevik, Norway, is now operating with carbon capture technology and has sold out of its EvoZero low-carbon cement for 2025, with a growing order book reported. The company plans to produce carbon-captured cement in the UK but, in the meantime, is supplementing supply with imports to meet the rising demand for low-carbon products in the country.

The UK produced 7.3 million tonnes of cement in 2024, roughly half the level seen in 1990, and imported 3.6 million tonnes. Approximately 3,500 tonnes of Heidelberg’s Norwegian-made EvoZero cement are currently stored in silos at the Port of Goole, ready for sale.

Andy Murphy, Commercial Director of Heidelberg Materials UK, said: “EvoZero is the world’s first carbon captured near-zero cement and sets new standards for sustainable building materials. The product achieves its near-zero footprint through the application of carbon capture and storage (CCS) and will help the UK construction industry reach its decarbonisation aims.”

Heidelberg Materials is developing around a dozen additional CCS-enabled cement products globally. The next operational project is planned at its Padeswood cement works in north Wales. This project reached a final investment decision with the UK government in September 2025 and is expected to produce EvoZero cement in 2029.

The Padeswood CCS project builds on the Brevik model. Brevik currently captures around 50% of its CO? emissions, equivalent to approximately 400,000 tonnes annually. Padeswood is designed to capture 95% of carbon emissions from the existing cement operations, amounting to around 800,000 tonnes per year.

These developments reflect Heidelberg Materials’ commitment to advancing sustainable building solutions and supporting the decarbonisation of the construction industry in Europe. The combination of domestic production and strategic imports allows the UK market to access low-carbon cement while local production capacity is being established.

EvoZero and similar products demonstrate the potential for cement plants to significantly reduce their carbon footprint through CCS technology. By scaling these solutions, Heidelberg aims to contribute to the construction sector’s environmental targets while expanding the availability of near-zero emission building materials across Europe.
