Baltica 2, a project implemented by PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna and Ørsted is one of the largest renewable energy projects in Poland.
Construction at sea is planned to begin this year and will see boulders removed from the seabed. Installation of foundations and transformer stations will begin in 2026, after which the connecting cables between the turbine foundations and the offshore transformer stations will be installed.
According to PGE, the first power generation from the wind farm is expected in 2027.
Thus far PGE and Ørsted have started building the onshore connection infrastructure, contracted the necessary components to start the construction, and secured the building permits.
For the purposes of installing the turbines, they have signed a lease agreement for port areas in Gdańsk. In Ustka, PGE’s operational and service base will be established, which will be used during the operation phase of the wind farm.
The project forms part of Poland’s plan to build out 18GW of offshore wind energy by 2040 and according to Prime Minister Donald Tusk, will be an important contributor to the country’s energy security.
Tusk commented in a statement: “The year 2025 will be a breakthrough in the Polish economy and a breakthrough in major investments, including those implemented in the energy sector. Energy will provide us with security and an impulse for economic development.
“Thanks to cheap and clean energy from offshore wind farms, Poland will be competitive with all economies in the world and this is a message that everyone should hear, because it is a good message for every energy recipient in Poland. I am pleased with this cooperation with the Danish side, which in my opinion is exemplary on a European scale and I am convinced that all of Europe will be able to look at it with envy, and we can be proud of it.”
Dariusz Marzec, President of the Management Board of PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna echoed this sentiment, stating: “This investment is a significant step in Poland’s energy transformation and is a major stimulus for economic development, which can attract new investments to the entire Polish economy and help create new jobs.”
