The fire affected a Südwind S70 wind turbine, which has a 65-meter hub height and a 1.5-megawatt output. Local residents reported smoke around 7 p.m., prompting the local fire department to notify EnBW. Shortly after, flames engulfed the turbine’s nacelle, which burned completely, while the transformer station remained intact. Debris, including parts of the rotor blades, fell into nearby fields, causing contamination.
Approximately 100 firefighters responded to the scene by 7:30 p.m., working alongside police to secure the area. EnBW confirmed no injuries occurred, and there was no risk to residents or traffic. The company promptly disconnected the entire wind farm from the grid to ensure safety.
EnBW has engaged authorities and experts to evaluate the damage and determine the cause of the fire, with assessments starting on May 19, 2025. The company is focused on confirming the plant’s structural stability and addressing environmental impacts in the surrounding area.
An EnBW spokesperson stated: “EnBW is working closely with the relevant authorities as well as the fire department and police to investigate the exact cause, assess the situation, and initiate any further necessary steps. The safety of local residents and employees is always the highest priority.”
