While renowned for high-performance processors, Nvidia also provides various AI models—covering areas such as physics simulations and autonomous vehicle systems—as open-source resources available to researchers and enterprises. Its proprietary CUDA platform remains widely adopted by developers, serving as a key factor in supporting hardware sales and market leadership in AI applications.
Following the announcement, along with the earlier release of new open-source AI models, Nvidia shares rose by 1.35 percent.
SchedMD develops scheduling software that efficiently manages large-scale computing tasks, which can utilize significant portions of data center resources. The company's flagship product, Slurm, is distributed as open-source software, allowing free access for users worldwide, while SchedMD generates revenue through professional engineering and maintenance services.
Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. Nvidia confirmed that it will maintain the open-source distribution of SchedMD's software going forward.
"Slurm, which is supported on the latest Nvidia hardware, is also part of the critical infrastructure needed for generative AI, used by foundation model developers and AI builders to manage model training and inference needs," Nvidia said in a blog post.
On the same day, Nvidia introduced an updated series of open-source AI models designed to deliver improved speed, cost efficiency, and performance compared to prior versions.
SchedMD was established in 2010 by Morris "Moe" Jette and Danny Auble, the original developers of Slurm, in Livermore, California. The company currently has a team of 40 employees, according to its official website.
Among its clients are cloud infrastructure provider CoreWeave and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, alongside other organizations relying on high-performance computing environments.
This acquisition enables Nvidia to integrate advanced workload orchestration capabilities directly into its ecosystem, facilitating smoother operations for customers running complex AI workflows on large clusters. By incorporating Slurm's established technology, Nvidia aims to enhance resource utilization and scalability for generative AI projects across research institutions and commercial deployments.
The continued emphasis on open-source contributions reflects Nvidia's strategy to foster broad adoption and collaboration within the global AI community.
