Each turbine, with an 8MW capacity, features blades and nacelles manufactured in Le Havre, France. Once operational, the fixed-bottom wind farm is expected to produce renewable electricity sufficient to meet the annual needs of nearly 800,000 people. The project emphasizes a strong local and European supply chain, with 95% of its primary suppliers based in Europe and over 50% in France.
Marc Hirt, Ocean Winds’ country manager for France, stated: “The installation of EMYN’s first turbine is a powerful demonstration of Ocean Winds’ commitment to France’s energy transition and our contribution to offshore wind development in the country and in the region.” He highlighted the project’s robust industrial footprint and the dedication of the teams involved.
The turbine towers were pre-assembled at the Port of Saint-Nazaire, with offshore installation conducted by Jan De Nul using the vessel Vole au Vent. EMYN project director Frédéric Flaus said: “We are proud to have successfully installed the first wind turbine on the EMYN project, a symbol of the excellent collaboration between all contractors and the EMYN project team.” He noted that the project is nearing completion, with commissioning planned by year-end.
Peter De Pooter, manager of offshore energy structures at Jan De Nul, added: “We are proud to support the installation of 61 turbines for EMYN, carried out by the highly skilled crew of our vessel Vole au Vent.” He emphasized the project’s role in advancing renewable energy and strengthening Jan De Nul’s expertise in European offshore wind initiatives.
The EMYN project has generated over 1,500 direct and indirect jobs during construction, including around 1,000 at Siemens Gamesa’s Le Havre facilities. Once operational, it will sustain 85 long-term jobs, with approximately 60 based on Yeu Island for operations and maintenance. France remains a key market for Ocean Winds, which is developing four offshore wind farms, including EMYN, with a combined capacity of 1.3GW, supporting the country’s renewable energy goals.
